Jane Aldridge, the 19-year-old Texan behind Sea of Shoes, tries to answer those questions in her latest endeavor, Style Yourself. Aldridge both covers, and writes the foreword to the book that, with the help of nearly 100 international bloggers including Tavi Gevinson and Susanna Lau, offers sartorial tips in one handy reference-like tome. You can also expect to get their two cents on shopping, outfit ideas, and building your own look, as well as thorough illustrations of all the pieces that go into a closet. The book comes out tomorrow, but ELLE caught up with Jane to hear some of her latest inspired advice.
ELLE: How did you get involved with the book in the first place?
JA: They approached me about a year ago, and asked me if I would be interested, and it sounded like a great fit.
ELLE: In your introduction, you talk about how fashion has always been a form of escapism for you, especially as an outsider in your town. Now you’ve become somewhat of a leader. What has that transformation been like?
JA: I’m still in the suburbs, and I’m not in the fashion world. I just feel so lucky that I can spend all day emerged in that world and make something out of it.
ELLE: What do you think is the difference between getting style advice from a personal style blogger verses a magazine editorial? What is it about style bloggers that people like?
JA: I think it’s so much more of a real-life context. They are all things you would wear every day. It’s all very accessible. They’re just people off the street, so it’s so great to have this index with all these outfits.
ELLE: How do you organize your own closet? Is it by color or item?
JA: My god. My closet’s a little bit small, so I put some in the garage during the winter. It’s kind of all over the place, I need to look into an organizational system. But we’ve made some closet space in my bedroom, and thats been helping a lot so I can always see what’s in my closet. Sometimes just glancing around my room I get ideas.

ELLE: What are you currently on the hunt for?
JA: Jodhpurs. It’s hard to find ones that have a lot of volume at the hips, that don’t make you look like a whale. I ordered someRalph Lauren ones, so we’ll see.
ELLE: What have you been inspired by lately?
JA: I’ve been looking at pictures of Jerry Hall from the 70s and 80s and I love her style, and her hair.
ELLE: What are some of your go-to summer outfits?
JA: It’s already 100 degrees here. I’ve been wearing this Rugby Ralph Lauren tea dress, it’s really strappy. I’ve worn it basically everyday for two months. I think I need to figure out some other outfit options. It’s so hot here, it’s hard to even think about clothes.
ELLE: A few years ago, you said you wanted to be a shoe buyer when you were older. What are your goals these days?
JA: I know I want to work in fashion. Maybe not so much in that capacity. My interest in photography—I’m a lot more in that direction now because I do it everyday. Now there’s so much of the technology that I don’t know about. I feel like the more I familiarize myself with the technology side of things, I think that might empower me to go in another direction, because that’s the only department I’m struggling with right now. With my blog, and trying to work my camera everyday I’m always trying to raise the bar for myself. I just really just want to learn as much as possible about some of the technical sides of it.
ELLE: What photographers are you really inspired by?
JA: I love Arthur Elgort, Albert Watson and Avedon of course.
ELLE: Have you had a chance to look at the book?
JA: I think it looks great. It’s so useful. It’s really approachable, no matter what your closet is like.
